Police K-9

     I am certified to train patrol dogs as well as scent detection dogs.  I require that dogs either complete my basic obedience course, or demonstrate that they have mastered skills equal to those achieved in my course.  I require off leash control if the handler ever intends to allow the dog off leash.  Patrol work will start with a separate evaluation of the dog's aptitude for attack work.  Dogs with acceptable temperaments will start with the personal protection program and putting the dog into a "watch" command.  We will progress to bite work then adding the attack command which can be any language you choose, however I do not recommend English for dogs working in America.  We will work on suspect holds in different situations, as well as crowd control work.  We will also work on building searches.  Much of the training time will be spent working on the out command.  We will practice the out command with your dog on the way to the bite and after he makes the bite.  My aim is to help you have a patrol dog that can take down a criminal, or help young children understand police functions. 

    Scent work will begin with drug scents or a different primary scent in a stick.  We will proof you dog by putting the scents into different types of containers, including metal, plastic, canvas, cotton etc.  This ensures that your dog identifies the drugs and not the container they are in.  We will also work on different concentrations in different size rooms.  I will also cover proper ways to search a room in a methodic and efficient manner.  I can teach an active or passive response depending on your wants and needs. 

Search and Rescue

    Whether you are simply a lone sweet soul doing great work, or are part of an organization that devotes its time to helping others I have the skills to help you get started and perfect your skills.  Getting started your dog will hunt for a scent stick under newspapers, learning how to trust his nose.  We will then move to short tracks being careful to have the wind direction blowing toward us. Adding in turns and length slowly your dog's skill will improve and his confidence will grow.  We will then work on changing scents and having your dog locate a new scent from one presented to him.  The process will go at your dogs pace.  This is a low pressure situation where your dog will succeed.

Assistance Work

    Owners will be screened before work starts on their dog.  I will hand select the specific puppy and specific breed to match your needs.  I will start your dog from puppy hood, working heavily on socializing to any situation where he may find himself.  Training will start at 4 months and will cover basic and advanced obedience.  Training usually takes several weeks, but no more than 2 months.  The advanced training will be tailored to your needs.  Whether you need a large dog to pull your wheelchair and open doors for you, or a smaller dog to simply pick up what you drop on the floor your dog will learn everything you need them to do.  From flipping lights on and off, to picking up keys and credit cards, you dog will be all he can be.  The varying nature of this training prohibits me from naming a timeline, it is all dependent on how much your dog will need to do.
